Every year, someone comes into one of our stores in December looking for the guitar, the watch or the console they saw on our floor back in October. Most of the time it’s gone. Nearly everything we sell is the only one we have, and when it sells, there isn’t another one coming off a truck.

That’s what layaway is for. You find the thing you want now, put a little down, and we hold it under your name while you pay it off. Here’s exactly how it works at Evergreen Traders this Christmas.

How layaway works

Start at the store that has the item. Put down 10% of the price, tax included, and we tag it with your name and take it off the floor. From there you pay it off on whatever schedule suits you, as long as a payment comes in at least every 30 days. When it’s paid, it’s yours to take home.

There’s no interest and no added charges on a layaway. You pay the ticket price, in pieces.

What 10% down looks like

Say you’ve found something priced at $400.

  • $400 plus 15% HST is $460.
  • 10% of that is $46. That’s all it takes to hold it.
  • The other $414 gets paid off over the next few weeks or months, at least once every 30 days.

Pay more when you can, less when you can’t. Paying it off early is always fine.

The Christmas date: December 24

If it’s a gift, pay it off and pick it up by Thursday, December 24. There’s no cut-off for starting one, but the earlier you start, the more time you have to spread out the payments before Christmas.

Why October beats December

October is when our floor is fullest and the lineups are shortest. The watch in the case today is the only one we have, and by the middle of December you won’t be the only one looking at it. Putting it away now means your shopping is done before the rush starts, and nobody else can walk out with it.

Good to know before you start

  • Terms run up to 10 months. Bigger tickets can run longer than smaller ones. Ask a staff member what fits your item.
  • Layaways stay at the store where they started. Layaways can’t be transferred between stores, so start yours at the store that has the item.
  • Payments are easy. Pay in store, or through the MobilePawn app once your layaway is started.
  • Sale items count. Most items can go on layaway at the price on the tag, sale tags included. A few clearance and consignment pieces can’t; ask a staff member which ones.
  • If plans change. Cancel within 30 days of your first deposit and the deposit comes back as store credit. After 30 days the 10% deposit is kept and anything you paid on top of it is refunded.
  • Your warranty and protection plan start on the day you take the item home, not the day you start the layaway.
